LEV Testing for the Metalworking Industry
LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) refers to the systems used to control and extract dust, fumes and aerosols from work processes. In the metalworking industry, oil mist particles, smoke and emulsion mist can be seriously damaging for inventory stock, the workshop environment, and worker’s health.
The sticky film created by oil mist particles can present a slip hazard, a build-up of oil mist in the machine can increase the potential for fire, and inhalation of oil mist particles can cause a number of serious lung diseases such asthma and other respiratory problems (e.g. ‘heavy metal lung’).
LEV and the HSE
The HSE is becoming increasingly proactive around the subject of air quality, e.g. Employers must:
Test most LEV systems every 14 months
Control exposure levels (CoSHH 2002, Workplace Exposure Limits EH40/2005)
Resources
The HSE’s website provides a wealth of information relating to employer’s LEV responsibilities with guides such as ‘Controlling Airborne contaminants at work (2017)’ and ‘Clearing the air: A simple guide to buying and using local exhaust ventilation’ and access to the relevant regulations, mentioned above.
